Jamess
In 1753 London
became the largest city in the world. The British
Museum explores the contrasts to be found in the capital
in that year with a range of exhibits including pictures,
porcelain, watches, tickets and personal memorabilia from
the period.

A Gardener's Labyrinth
Portraits of People, Plants and Places
The National Portrait Gallery in London is holding a specially
commissioned exhibition of photographs of gardeners representing
a cross-section of every aspect of gardening in the British
Isles. It is divided into Menu in which the history
of the British garden and a view of the contemporary gardener
will be examined and considered. Learn

Summer Opening of Clarence House
Formerly the home
of the late Queen Mother, now the London residence of Prince
Charles, Clarence
House is opening its doors to the public.

The London Maze - Local History Fair
Taking place at
the Guildhall Art Gallery, this fair is opened by well known
TV historian Michael Wood and includes free tours of London's

Age
The first exhibition
to feature in the Museum
of London's new Linbury Gallery, Twenties London: a
City in the Jazz Age will bring to life this vibrant period
in the capital's history that shaped its development throughout
the 20th century.
2nd November
London to Brighton Veteran Car Run
This years annual
Veteran
Car Run is teaming up with the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.
It first took place in November 1896 to celebrate the raising
of speed limit for cars from 4 mph to 14 mph. Only cars
built before 1st January 1905 are eligible to take place
now.

The Lord
Mayor's Show has an 800 year history and features a
procession with more than 5000 participants.

Memories of the East End
At JFS at Bell Lane, 3pm, historian and author, Dr Gerry
Black, in conversation with Ralph Barnes, a former teacher,
and Lazarus Sheridan and Yetta Banks, who were students
in the 1930's. Organised by the Jewish
Museum, London, admission £5.

It is surprising to realise that many major archaelogical
finds have been made by amateurs including the Salisbury
and Winchester Hoards. The British
Museum's exhibition shows how these amateur finds have
changed our view of history.
