The
war took its toll on the fabric of London, destroying well
known landmarks, irreplaceable historic buildings as well
as homes, shops, offices and factories. The loss of life and
the serious injuries were considerable too with almost 30,000
people killed during the war in London and a further 50,000
seriously injured. Amongst the buildings destroyed were:

belonging to the medieval city guilds)
Halls and libraries of the
Inns of Court
Holland House, a Jacobean
mansion in West London
Chelsea Old Church
Wholesale damaged had been inflicted
on
the area around St Paul's
Cathedral
around Moorgate in the City
alongside the River Thames
around Ludgate Circus
the East London boroughs of
Stepney, Poplar and Bethnal Green
the South London boroughs
of Southwark and Bermondsey
