How do we know about the Great Fire of London?
by Deborah
Fox, Publisher - Heinemann Library
History Key Stage 1
Aimed at children in the 5 to
7 year old range, How do we know about the Great Fire
of London? by Deborah Fox and published by
Heinemann Library is a beautifully illustrated book, ideal
for early readers or for parents who want to read to their
children. Each
page has a colourful picture to illustrate the few lines
of large text on it. The first part of the book tells the
story of the Great Fire simply and clearly. It goes on to
describe the aftermath - how the City was in ruins and the
homeless had to live in tents or huts, then how the City
was rebuilt.

A chapter
towards the end of the book introduces children to the concept
of proof and is entitled 'How do we know?' It tells us that
surviving documents, like diaries, and paintings and engravings
can give us good information about what happened then.
It introduces
some difficult words throughout the book, like architects,
astronomy and receipt. These are shown in bold in the text
and are listed in a glossary at the back, still in large
type.
This is a lovely
book and such an interesting and exciting story, well illustrated,
it is likely to encourage any child who reads it to become
interested in history.
