Beautifully illustrated, How
do we know about the Great Plague? by Deborah Fox
and published by Heinemann Library, is
a Key Stage 1 book, aimed at children in the 5 to 7 year old range.
The story is simply told in an
easy to understand style, ideally suited for the intended age
group. It introduces the story through the rhyme, 'Ring-a-ring
o' roses', a favourite of children for centuries. This rhyme,
the author explains, refers to the symptoms of plague. She goes
on to describe the symptoms but briefly and without going into
upsetting detail. The story continues with what happened to
victims and what Londoners did to avoid the disease.
Children are introduced to the
concept of sources in a chapter called 'How do we know?' where
contemporaneous accounts and drawings are shown together with
historical records.
To round off this excellent book,
there is a Timeline and Glossary of selected words from the
text that young children might not know.
Because this is such an interesting
story, well told and illustrated, with a picture on every page,
this book is ideal for introducing young children to history.
