Acclaimed TV historian Michael Wood will officially open The London Maze, the City of London’s local history fair, when it takes place on Saturday October 11th 2003 at the Guildhall Art Gallery.

Guildhall Library and Guildhall Art Gallery are hosting this fun and informative event devoted to London and its history. With over 30 stalls from London's museums, local history libraries, archives, historical groups and societies, expert talks, guided walks, tours of Roman London's amphitheatre, Guildhall Art Gallery talks, children's storytelling, Victorian parlour magic and much more there should be something for everyone.

Michael has most recently been on our screens as the writer and presenter of BBC2’s In Search of Shakespeare. He is the author of several best selling books and over seventy TV films including In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, Conquistadors, Saddam’s Killing Fields and Hitler’s Search for the Holy Grail.

Highlights on the day include:

  • Free entry to Guildhall Art Gallery and the Guildhall’s medieval Crypt and historic Old Library and Old Print Room
  • Photographic surgery– bring along your photographs for guidance on how to date and interpret them with Audrey Linkman from Open University
  • Free expert talks – Sources at Guildhall Library, People of Roman London, London 1700, Makers of the Victorian Metropolis, Identifying Victorian family photographs
  • Free tours of Roman London’s Amphitheatre with curators from the Museum of London
  • Demonstrations of 19th Century Surgery by the Old Operating Theatre Museum – you can even volunteer to have your leg ‘amputated’
  • Children’s’ storytelling corner & Victorian parlour magic
  • Gallery Talks by expert staff on selected paintings in the Guildhall Art Gallery
  • Charles Dickens Museum offering the chance to write with Charles Dickens’ own pen
  • Guided City walks – Discovering the Hidden City, The Historic City, Discovering Roman London, Pepys’ London, Victorian London. (please book in advance to avoid disappointment - £5 for adults, children free)

Guildhall Art Gallery
On the day there will be free entry to the Gallery, one of London’s hidden gems including the 2,000 year old Roman Amphitheatre. The Gallery displays a renowned collection of Victorian paintings and sculpture as well as fascinating London images from the 16th Century to the present day.
