London has long been a popular setting for murder mysteries and A Metropolitan Murder is the latest addition to the genre. The underground Metropolitan railway line has recently been opened when the last train of the night pulls into Baker Street station where it is terminating. The station's booking office clerk checks all the carriages to make sure everybody has left the train. On reaching the last carriage he finds the body of a young woman who has been strangled. Enter police Inspector Decimus Webb to investigate the murder. As he investigates, we see the slums of 19th century London and a home for fallen women. Inspector Webb's hunt for the murderer uncovers some of the murky secrets and hypocrisies concealed behind the outward show of Victorian respectability. Lee Jackson brings the city and era vividly to life, making the most of the atmosphere of Victorian London. We can almost smell the slums and see the murky gaslit stations and streets. Not only is the book full of believable and compelling characters, but it has an intricate and credible plot that will keep you turning the pages.
