Museums in London SE1

Florence Nightingale Museum
Florence Nightingale must be the most famous nurse in the world and this museum at the southern end of Westminster Bridge celebrates her life and achievements. It contains a unique collection of her personal possessions including clothes, furniture, books, letters and portraits. As might be expected, there is a good section of exhibits relating to her role in the Crimean War and the Scutari Hospital there.

Tube: Westminster on the Jubilee Line

Directions: Leave the tube station, turning left over Westminster Bridge. When you have crossed the bridge, the museum is on the right and is part of St Thomas' Hospital.

Museum of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
This museum, open by appointment only, has fine collections covering 500 years of pharmaceutical objects including dispensing equipment and drug storage containers, 17th - 18th century Lambeth delftware, 18th - 21st century proprietary medicines, bronze mortars, medical caricatures and photographs.

Directions: When you come out of the tube station, just across the road, almost immediately opposite, there is small road called Hercules Road. Walk down there to the end then turn right into Lambeth Road. Lambeth High Street is the fourth turning on the left. The museum is on the corner.

Design Museum
Housed in a 1950s warehouse, this museum is devoted to 20th century design. It has permanent exhibitions of mass produced items, many still in use now. It seeks to explain how design affects our everyday life and why products look and work in the way they do. The museum also has temporary exhibitions of modern design.

Tube: Tower Hill on the Central and District Lines or Tower Gateway on the Docklands Light Railway.

Directions: Whether you use Tower Hill or Tower Gateway stations, cross Tower Bridge then take the first turning on the left and then immediate left again into Horselydown. Shad Thames is at the bottom of that road on the right and runs alongside the Thames.
