This is another outing for Scotland Yard detective Decimus Webb, last seen in A Metropolitan Murder, and his subordinate, Sergeant Bartleby. In this new book, The Welfare of the Dead, author Lee Jackson draws a convincing portrait of the fog-shrouded capital city.

Somebody has murdered two women of easy virtue and a coffin been broken open in cemetary. It's not long before Inspector Webb suspects a connection between the two crimes and perhaps between an earlier fraud. His investigations lead him to the very respectable Woodrow family and, in particular, Jasper Woodrow, proprietor of the Mourning Warehouse. What secrets is he hiding and has he been driven to murder to keep them hidden?

Lee Jackson manages to keep the reader guessing right to the final chapter. His characters are well-drawn and believable. We see some of the story through the eyes of Annabelle Krout, feisty cousin of Mrs Woodrow visiting from America giving us an insight into a stranger's vision of 19th century London. The Welfare of the Dead is an enjoyable and intriguing mystery with an engaging pair of detectives.
